With the infrastructural revival of strategic health care institutions, the health system in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba seeks to optimize medical care, despite the obstacles imposed by the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade.

According to Yanet Veranes, director of Medical Assistance and Technology of the territory, in a TV appearance, the largest investment is concentrated in the Saturnino Lora General Hospital, with the opening of renovated Sterilization and Blood Bank facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of the Pathological Anatomy area.

The capital construction repair of the Emergency Room and the ICU (Emergency Intensive Care Unit) was also highlighted, with the expansion of the number of beds and the creation of new spaces, in order to attend more patients and facilitate the proper development of the processes in a specialty with a high affluence of patients.

With respect to the Juan Bruno Zayas General Hospital, with 15 rooms in operation, the doctor underscored the joint support of companies and organizations in the successful delivery of the first seven, while acknowledging the recovery of the small board of the Rehabilitation service and the uninterrupted work in the Surgical Unit.

She pointed out the comfort provided to medical rooms, and the opening of a cafeteria, a juice shop and an agricultural and livestock market, premises that will benefit patients, companions and workers of the center itself.

Regarding the work in child care institutions, Veranes affirmed the remodeling of the Emergency and Urgent Care System of the Antonio Maria Beguez Pediatric Hospital, an architectural work of patrimonial importance for the Hero City.

She specified the works in the Minor and Major Respiratory wards, and the expansion of hospitalization capacities, with the purpose of consolidating the regional Surgery and Oncopediatrics services.

The doctor valued as a significant achievement the reopening of the Intermediate Therapy Unit at the Juan de la Cruz Martinez pediatric institution, as well as the opening of a children's house for the benefit of more than 40 workers with early childhood children.

There are 18 hospitals in Santiago de Cuba and most of them are being repaired as far as possible, although the most important works are concentrated in four institutions due to the regional services they provide and the number of people they are responsible for, explained Veranes.

In addition to the infrastructure work, the health sector in the territory promotes the integral training of future professionals and postgraduate training, with the aim of offering the population high quality services.
