Cubans Jorge Roberto Elias and Yerisbel Miranda will face the third rounds of the Medellin 2025 Sub-Zonal 2.3.2 Chess Tournament today, away from the vanguard, which distributes a world championship place in each gender.

For Elias, the tournament started with success over the local Juan Alejandro Leon, a U-18 boy who did not represent great complications. But, in his next presentation things did not happen as expected against the also host Orlando David Borre.

Of the 286 players in the Open segment, 44 had a perfect performance during the opening round and lead the ranking.

In the women's section, Yerisbel made a bad debut against the local Greissy Sofia Valencia. She chose several ill-advised moves in an ending in which the passed pawns took power and tilted her king after 68 sets of a Queen's Gambit, in which she led the white pieces.

To minimize the blow, she then defeated the local Laura Sofia Fontecha, and with one unit in her locker she will look to improve her 42nd place with a win over Colombia's Isabela Brito.

The reigning Cuban queen cannot afford any more slips in her quest to fulfill the predictions that place her as the main candidate to win the only place in the World Cup offered by the competition.
