Cuba reiterated its support for finding a peaceful and negotiated solution to the current crisis in Syria. During an interactive dialogue on the issue, Anayansi Rodriguez, permanent representative of Cuba to the United Nations Office in Geneva, emphasized that it is disturbing the continuing loss of countless lives.
She regretted that millions of people had been forced to take refuge in other States, displaced by war, which continue plundering the Syrian archaeological and cultural heritage, and that thousands of people, most of them civilians, had been executed by extremist groups.
Rodriguez expressed concern about the fact that local and international efforts to achieve peace collide with the interest of some of the parties involved in the conflict to continue armed clashes.
The true interests of the Syrian people have to be privileged, including the right to peace, self-determination and life, Rodriguez added.
We renew our confidence that the Syrian people will be able to resolve its differences by itself and we demand an end to outside interference, she stressed during her speech in the context of the 31st session of the Human Rights Council.
