“We are not creating blocs or alliances […], we simply act in the interests of our people,” explained the Russian leader. ” Relations between Russia and China are at the best moment in their history, based on the principles of equal rights,” he said.

Putin also stressed that the SCO has consolidated its role as one of the key pillars of an equitable multipolar world order.

“We will certainly support the Chinese presidency of the SCO in 2024-25,” he added. The Russian president said he expects Xi Jinping to attend the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan in October this year.

Xi, for his part, declared: “The agreements reached between China and Russia are being fully implemented, and cooperation in the directions we have charted is proceeding smoothly”.

According to him, faced with an international situation and a much more difficult external environment, Moscow and Beijing must maintain their commitment to “friendship forever”.

The meeting between Putin and Xi comes a month and a half after the Russian president traveled to China, where agreements were signed for closer ties between the two powers and strategic interaction between Moscow and Beijing.
