London, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) Cubans residing in the United Kingdom denounced that the Stripe payment system froze the account created to send humanitarian aid to Cuba for fear of violating the US blockade.

“Once again our association has been the victim of the US blockade against Cuba,” the non-governmental organization stated on its website.

Last week, Cubans in the UK announced that they had been authorized by Stripe to raise funds through the GoFundMe, JustGiven and Crowfunder UK platforms, after learning that British laws prohibit the extraterritorial application of the blockade.

“Just when we thought we had found a loophole in the sanctions by sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, the Stripe payment management platform blocked our account after confirming that we could use their service, and when we had raised almost a thousand pounds sterling online (about $1,200).

According to the association, to disguise the reason for that decision and avoid any legal litigation, Stripe alleged a number of justifications such as financial crimes, money laundering, high risk and terrorism.

Daniesky Acosta, of Cubans in the UK, informed Prensa Latina that they have filed a formal complaint with the Financial Ombudsman Service and are organizing a meeting with members of the House of Commons to update them on the situation.

“We will continue to denounce this injustice to the relevant authorities, and we will also continue the campaign against the criminal blockade of Cuba and its extraterritorial effects, which constitute a clear violation of British and European law and international law,” he remarked.
