Guided by officials from the Cuban Embassy in the United States, students from Harriet Tubman Elementary School in this capital learned about the life of Jose Marti, the most universal of all Cubans.
The initiative is part of the diplomatic mission’s program to celebrate Marti’s 172nd birthday on January 28.
During the meeting with the students, the Embassy’s Culture Secretary, David Ramirez, explained how much the Apostle loved children, whom he considered “the hope of the world.”
He also told them about the Cuban national hero’s efforts to achieve his country’s independence in the 19th century and the value he placed on unity to achieve that purpose.
Ramírez commented on Marti’s ties with the United States, the time he spent in Tampa with the cigar rollers, and in New York, where he founded Patria (Homeland) newspaper on March 14, 1892.
During the meeting, Marti’s poems were read and images of Cuba’s landscapes and natural beauty were shown to the schoolchildren.
