The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel sent this Sunday a congratulation to the renowned Brazilian writer and theologian, Frei Betto on his 80th birthday.
On his account on the social network X, the dignitary expressed to the good friend of the Cuban people and its Revolution, the reasons why he is admired in this land.
Frei Betto has expressed in various scenarios the significance that the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz (1926-2016), has for him, whom he described as 'Sower of Hope'.
“Fidel was always an idol for me…when the Cuban Revolution triumphed I was 15 years old, I fell in love with all the bearded men from the Sierra Maestra, I followed that very closely because I was already participating in movements that had a leftist tendency and I also had an anti-imperialist vision.
“When I was in prison we had a clandestine radio, in a cell where we were 50 prisoners, and in a box of sweets they brought us a battery-operated radio, and we listened to Fidel…my relationship with Cuba is very rational, but also very emotional, it comes from my youth, from that my admiration for Fidel, for Che and then I began to read about the history of the Cuban Revolution.”
