Iran on Monday celebrated the 46th anniversary of the Green Revolution, the milestone that marked the end of the monarchy of Mohamed Reza Pahlevi and the beginning of the confrontation with the United States, thus becoming a regional subpower.
Tens of thousands of Iranians gathered at Azadi Square (Freedom, in Farsi) where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian assured the crowd that “we will never submit to foreign powers.”
The statement was made when saying that “(US President Donald) Trump says let’s talk, but immediately changes the tone and announces all possible plans designed to undermine this revolution.”
The mass popular movement that overthrew the Persian monarchical government took by surprise the huge US embassy in Tehran and US intelligence services that were unable to estimate its magnitude and was followed by the retention in Washington’s mission of dozens of officials.
The event elevated Ayatollah Ruollah Khomeini to the category of world personality, and his preaching from his exile in France united Iranians from all walks of society and detonated popular mobilizations, which the army joined, it was recalled.
A bizarre rescue operation prepared by the United States to rescue its officials ended in a huge fiasco that weighed negatively on the intentions of then President James Carter to be re-elected for a second consecutive term.
In a recent and unexpected move, the Iranian president visited Moscow, where he signed a strategic partnership agreement with Russia, which includes “military cooperation, described by President Vladimir Putin as a “counterweight to the dictates of the West.”
