Dominicans and Americans improve to 2-0 in Italy

Dominican Republic and United States claimed their second victories in as many days at the FIVB Women’s World Championship on Wednesday.

The Dominican team won in straight sets over Tunisia in Pool A one day after defeating Germany in five sets. The Americans booked their second 3-0 victory in Pool C by sweeping Kazakhstan.

Also, Puerto Rico defeated Cuba (0-2) in consecutive sets to even their record at 1-1 while Canada (1-2) lost to Turkey and Mexico (0-2) fell at the hands of Russia in straight sets.

Dominican Republic 3, Tunisia 0

The Dominicans held advantages of 9-5 in blocks and 6-4 in aces during their 25-14, 25-19, 25-10 victory over Tunisia to improve their mark to 2-0 in Pool A.

Dominican Republic’s Gina Mambru scored 12 points as the only player in the match to reach double digits. Bethania De la Cruz added seven in the winning effort. Tunisia’s Kaouthar Jemaii finished with ten points.

Turkey 3, Canada 0

Turkey decisively defeated Canada 25-10, 25-12, 25-17 in Pool B. The Canadians now have a 1-1 win-loss record.

Turkey’s Ozsoy Neriman topped scoring with 16 point followed by Tokatlioglu Seda with 15 and Akman Kubra with 10 points. In contrast, no Canadian player reached double digits, and the team's top scorer was Lucy Charuk with nine points.

United States 3, Kazakhstan 0

United States improved their record to 2-0 with six points in Pool C following a 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 triumph over Kazakhstan.

Kelly Murphy was the American best scorer with 13 points, followed by Jordan Larson-Burbach and Kimberly Hill with nine points apiece. Inna Matveyeva and Tatyana Murdritskaya had 12 and 9 points, respectively, in the losing cause.

Russia 3, Mexico 0

Russia handed Mexico their second defeat in as many outings in Pool C with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-13 victory.

Regina Moroz and Ekaterina Gamova topped the Russian attack with 13 and 11points, respectively, followed by Tatiana Kosheleva who added nine points in the victory. Andrea Rangel had 11 points for Mexico and Lisbeth Sainz added eight.

Puerto Rico 3, Cuba 0

Karina Ocasio scored 24 points to lead the 25-22, 27-25, 25-19 victory of Puerto Rico over Cuba in a battle of NORCECA teams in Pool D. Puerto Rico evened their win-loss record at 1-1 while Cuba dropped to 0-2.

Stephanie Enright and Yarimar Rosa also reached double figures in the scores with 12 and 10, respectively, while Lynda Morales contributed nine tallies. Cuba’s Melissa Vargas finished with 14 points, followed by Alena Orta and Daymara Lescay who had 9 apiece.
