Nishinoshima now has an area of about 2.45 square kilometers, 52 times larger than Tokyo Dome, the JCG said Tuesday.
A JCG plane that observed the island Tuesday morning reported that there were five to six eruptions per minute from a 100-meter-high crater on the island’s south side, which was spewing lava. Smoke billowed up to an altitude of 1,200 meters, the JCG said. The land area has increased by 0.16 square kilometers since December last year.
