Adhanom Ghebreyesus also reiterated that many countries are experiencing an exponential rise in Covid-19 cases, causing hospitals and intensive care units to be near or beyond capacity.
'We urge leaders to take immediate action to prevent further unnecessary deaths, collapse of essential healthcare services, and further closures of schools. As I said in February, and I repeat today, this is not a drill,' Adhanom warned.
WHO's leader also called for supporting individuals, families and businesses to comply with restrictive measures.
The Executive Director of the WHO's Health Emergency Program, Mike Ryan, assured that no country is out of danger and even nations with few cases in the first wave can now be hit harder.
