Art, culture, commitment, and national identity distinguish the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), which is about to celebrate its 64th anniversary on August 22.

At a time when we are under such economic and cultural attack, UNEAC must continue to be a platform for thought where writers and artists have the responsibility to save Cuban culture and the nation, the organization’s president, Marta Bonet, emphasized in a report broadcast on national television.

They must foster unity among the entire artistic movement and march alongside our people, she added.

In the opinion of the president of Casa de las Americas, Abel Prieto, UNEAC can be that intellectual, pro-Fidel, and revolutionary vanguard in times when there is a satanic side to the social media that does us great harm, influencing and manipulating us in terms of information and emotions.

It can do much to help in that battle right now, she emphasized.

According to Lesbia Vent Dumois, visual artist and UNEAC vice president, the institution has a fundamental objective: to fulfill what Fidel proposed when he created it: it should contain the most important and representative elements of Cuban culture.

That is the spirit Fidel instilled in us; he founded it for that purpose, and this was his home, Bonet asserted. It is also the message President Miguel Diaz-Canel conveys in each of his speeches, at the conferences he has attended, and on the platforms where we have had the opportunity to interact with him.
