Pedro Kouri Esmeja, microbiologist and father of Cuban parasitology, was born in Haiti on August 21, 1900.
He lived in Cuba from a very early age. His numerous scientific works, the medical journals he founded, and the level of his professional responsibilities in both public and private institutions were notable, earning him a prominent place in the international scientific community.
His most significant studies were the development of Protozoology, all aspects of amebiasis, the compilation of clinical statistics on parasitism, and the study and treatment of Balantidiasis and Trichomoniasis.
Kouri devised diagnostic and monitoring methods for several morbidities, was a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Havana, and represented Cuba at several congresses.
In 1935, he founded the KUBA parasitology laboratories and a clinical journal on the subject, which now bears the name Revista Cubana de Medicina Tropical (Cuban Journal of Tropical Medicine).
Kouri died in Havana on October 16, 1964.
The Tropical Medicine Institute, an institution that keeps his legacy alive, currently bears his name.
