The Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of professor, critic, and researcher Ismael Albelo in Havana today. A devoted scholar, Albelo dedicated much of his career to the study and promotion of theatrical dance.
A graduate of the University of the Arts (ISA), Albelo was one of the most active members of the Criticism and Research Section of UNEAC’s Performing Artists Association. The institution highlighted his frequent participation in panels and lectures.
The Ministry of Culture noted his significant contributions as a specialist at the National Council for the Performing Arts, where he played a key role in organizing and promoting numerous initiatives. During this fruitful period, he advised events, coordinated festivals, and strengthened the national visibility of dance.
UNEAC’s official statement also emphasized Albelo’s work as an educator at institutions such as ISA, the Fernando Alonso National Ballet School, and the Lizt Alfonso Ballet Teaching Unit. Additionally, he was part of the organizing team for the International Meeting of Ballet Academies.
His career extended to journalism and specialized criticism, with publications in Cuban and international media. He was a regular contributor to programs such as Ballet on CMBF Radio Musical Nacional, as well as Bravo and the Cultural News on Cuban television.
In 1992, alongside maestro Ramiro Guerra, Albelo co-founded the Center for Dance Development and for years coordinated the Los días de la danza (Days of Dance) Festival, curating programs of exceptional quality.
He served as a jury member in national and international competitions and collaborated closely with the National Ballet of Cuba, including at the Alicia Alonso International Ballet Festival of Havana. He also accompanied Cuban companies on international tours and maintained strong ties with the renowned Camagüey Ballet.
UNEAC also recognized his leadership in international projects that strengthened cultural ties between Cuba and dance companies from the U.S., South Africa, Mexico, and Jamaica. His efforts included organizing tributes such as the Alicia Alonso Gala in Johannesburg and the Ballet Royalty Gala in Havana.
Albelo authored the 2013 book Repertorio de ballet del siglo XIX (19th-Century Ballet Repertoire) and in 2014 became the representative of the Rosario Cárdenas Dance Company.
In closing, UNEAC extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, stating: "The work of maestro Ismael Albelo left an indelible mark on Cuban culture, particularly in dance, the art form to which he devoted his talent and energy."
