The rumba is much more than a musical and dance genre: it’s an authentic culture, with a richness that goes beyond the limits of the strictly artistic to reach the daily life, modes of expression, and sensibilities of a people. It cuts across different manifestations, from music and dance to visual arts and literature, and has established itself as an essential element of identity. It could even be said that it’s an attitude—and also an aptitude—for life, where joy, resilience, and community converge.

Although at certain times some associated it with marginalization, the truth is that rumba has always been the voice of resistance among the popular sectors, a way of stylizing daily routines and sublimating social tensions. Percussion, singing, and dancing became spaces for relaxation, affirmation, and creativity, where participants could express themselves freely. In this sense, the rumba was a refuge and expression of dignity for communities that found their own language in it.

Its huge cultural and anthropological value has earned significant recognition, such as UNESCO's declaration as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This fact confirms that it’s not just a local artistic manifestation, but a contribution of universal scope, capable of engaging with the world's cultures and showcasing the island's uniqueness. Every beat, every song, and every movement reveal a collective memory that reinvents itself and connects with the present.

The origins of rumba must be sought in the celebrations and ceremonies of African slaves, who brought with them rhythms, instruments, and worldviews that found fertile ground in Cuba. But the rumba soon transcended that sphere becoming a common heritage, part of the heritage of an entire nation. Today, it’s impossible to understand the symbolic system or the formal framework of Cuban culture without considering the rumba, which remains alive, vital, reinventing itself, and asserting itself as one of the most authentic expressions of the national spirit.
