The Spanish Film Showcase begins today at the capital's Yara Theater with the screening of the feature-length documentary La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés (2024) by director C. Tangana.

The event is a joint initiative of the Cuban Institute of Cinematic Art and Industry and the Embassy of Spain in Cuba.

Alicia Morel, the cultural counselor of the diplomatic mission, highlighted the importance of the event in a press conference, stating, "For Spain, Cuban cinema holds great prestige; this showcase is an annual milestone in our cultural programming, one of the ones we prepare with the greatest excitement."

The opening film presents the perspective of its director after meeting Cortés, an unusual figure within flamenco art, and becoming fascinated with his talent and family history.

The two decided to embark on a journey to record an album, resulting in a unique musical experience with a narrative of passion, love, and forgiveness.

Until next November 13, the Yara and 23 y 12 theaters will host a selection of 11 feature films and one animated short film, all produced within the last two years.

Titles such as Salve María by Mar Coll; Mariposas negras by David Baute; La infiltrada by Arantxa Echevarría; El salto by Benito Zambrano; Tardes de soledad by Albert Serra; and Los pequeños amores by Celia Rico, among others, make up the program.

The inauguration and screening of La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés will take place at 6:00 p.m. local time at the Yara Theater. The details of the showcase's program are available on the social media channels of both organizing institutions.
