The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, expressed today his nation's gratitude to India for the humanitarian support provided in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa's impact on the Caribbean island.
On his X profile, the top Cuban diplomat stated that the Indian government's shipment of 20 tons of aid to Jamaica and Cuba, both hard-hit by the storm, constitutes a "noble gesture."
The shipment, which departed today from New Delhi, includes essential supplies, medicines, medical equipment, electrical generators, shelter support, and hygiene kits.
Assessing the Impact
Hurricane Melissa struck Cuban territory last week as a Category 3 storm, following its devastating path through the Caribbean. It caused severe flooding and significant material damage to homes and crops in the eastern provinces.
According to a preliminary damage assessment, 45,282 homes were affected, and more than 120,000 Cubans remain in protected shelters.
The Cuban government, with its National Defense Council activated, maintains constant monitoring of the situation—from the initial threat of Hurricane Melissa, through its devastating passage, and now into the recovery phase.
The Path to Recovery
President Miguel Díaz-Canel, while leading a meeting of the National Defense Council, reaffirmed that the most complex stage—recovery—is advancing with the conviction that "no one will be left to fend for themselves."
