Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged leaders of the island's construction industry to multiply the capacities for material production and accelerate the constructive pace to achieve the goal of building 60,000 housing units per year.

Speaking at a meeting to assess the national housing program, the Cuban president demanded a change of current mechanisms that regulate activities that are lagging, like the supply of cement to the provinces, fundamentally the one directed to the points of sales, where the population can go to meet their needs.

"In difficult times, you have to think differently," he told those responsible for the program, which also examined the causes of delays in documentation, and the current state of rehabilitation, subsidies, recovery after severe weather events, eradication of dirt floors and care for mothers with three or more children," the Presidency of Cuba website reported.

On this regard aimed at stimulating the demographic dynamics, the website said that the general director of Housing, Vivian Rodríguez Salazar, reported that some 479 families have benefitted from this initiative, 271 of them with new homes built, 44 expansions, 140 refurbished and the delivery of ten state-owned properties.

Diaz-Canel insisted on the need to reach the capacity to produce enough building materials at the local level that provide for the daily completion of at least one home per municipality.

"This is key to achieving compliance with the annual plans and move forward to transform the housing fund into one that is comfortable and long-lasting.
