Turkey's largest city Istanbul was shaken in the early hours of Monday by a blast near a police station. Two attackers gunned down by police.
A bomb blast injured at least 10 people, including three police officers, in Istanbul, Turkey early Monday morning, in what may have been an attack targeting police. Just after the attack, police reported a shootout with two alleged suspects of the explosion and said both were killed by police.
Five police officers were among the wounded, after the explosion detonated outside a police station in the neighborhood of Sultanbeyli. The explosion engulfed the building in flames, and led to a partial collapse of the complex, according to Turkey's state-owned Anadolu Agency.
The agency reported the blast shook the surrounding neighborhoods, damaging cars parked nearby the police station.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came days after Kurdish groups urged the Turkish government to resume a cease-fire with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Turkey put an end to the cease-fire with the PKK, agreed to in 2013, when Ankara launched an offensive against Kurdish fighters in July. At the same time, Turkish forces also unleashed a series of airstrikes on Kurdish positions in northern Iraq and Syria two weeks ago, though the government claimed these attacks aimed to weaken the Islamic State group.
In response to the violation of the cease-fire, the PKK said it would also step up its attacks against the Turkish government.
Recent clashes between the PKK and the government have killed more than 260 Kurdish fighters, Andalou Agency reported earlier this month.. Some two dozen members of Turkish security forces have also been killed, according to Hurriyet Daily News, as well as several civilians.
Turkey's new campaign against the Kurds and the spike in tensions with the PKK has come after a terror attack in the southern Turkish town of Suruc killed at least 33 Kurdish socialist activists.
