“Obviously Real Madrid fans are particularly fond of the European Cup. If you’re asking me to pick one then I’d have to go with the Champions League,” Casillas said on Thursday at a ceremony organized by Hyundai during an interview with Alvaro Benito, his former Real teammate.
“Winning a second successive Champions League title has never been achieved before and is an exciting challenge,” he added, according to Real Madrid’s official website.
Casillas overlapped with the view of his coach, the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, who sees a greater chance of winning the European title rather than La Liga, where Real Madrid is trying to keep up with Barcelona.
Real Madrid will face Sevilla in a tough game next Saturday in the 35th round of La Liga, but Casillas in confident in his team’s chances, as Barcelona will be facing Cordoba.
He also praised the level of Unai Emery’s Sevilla squad: “They are also fighting for a Champions League place and are through the semifinals of the Europa League. But there are three vital points up for grabs as we need to win all our games and hope that Barcelona slip up. We want to make it difficult for Barcelona by picking up three hugely important points in our bid to win the La Liga title.”
As for Real Madrid’s chances in the Champions League, Casillas highlighted that there are equal chances for Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich to take the title.
Finally, he praised his first Champions League title with Real Madrid, conquered in 2000, and the 2010 World Cup with the Spanish team, as the titles have left an impact on his career.
“Your mentality changes. When you’re young you have more hunger, then later on you enjoy having an extensive trophy cabinet and when you know you’re approaching the end of your playing career, you want to win games in order to make the fans happy,” concluded the veteran goalkeeper.
