Donald Trump took the presidency on January 20 and, among eccentricities and other demons whose name in good Spanish is unpublishable, he left us as a gift for World Environmental Education Day, held this Sunday (less than a week after his moving into the oval office) an irrefutable lesson: he is the worst enemy of the planet, well, only surpassed by the fascist imperialism he represents.

He announced it in his priorities and, indeed, signed an executive order for the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, a binding international treaty, adopted in 2015, which establishes a framework for global climate action. Its main objective is to limit global warming to "well below 2 degrees Celsius" and to seek to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. This agreement is based on nationally determined contributions, where each country sets its own emission reduction goals.

But of course, the United States' withdrawal from the Paris Agreement surprises... no one. Not only because the tycoon accompanied it with other acts without sufficient adjectives such as the withdrawal from the WHO or raids against migrants in the purest NAZI style, but because this decision is already a remix of his first term (2017 - 2021) when he also annulled the commitments of a country that’s among the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world.

Let's review some of the consequences of that time, because now history repeats itself: the Trump administration reversed numerous environmental regulations and promoted the use of fossil fuels and, consequently, the loss of opportunities in the transition to a low-carbon economy, as the great world power stopped investing in renewable energy, clean technologies and other innovative solutions for climate change, in addition, it deprived the Green Climate Fund of one of its main contributors.

Unfortunately, this situation reminds us of the fragility of international agreements and the importance of political stability to address global challenges. It’s necessary to strengthen international cooperation and keep a continuous commitment to climate action (among many other urgent actions), but is it possible in the midst of the current world order? In a panorama where the most powerful nations are untouchable and a psychopath is raised as a symbol of “democracy”?
