The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived on Tuesday afternoon (local time) in this capital, where he began a working visit to address the priorities of the bilateral agenda, following the re-election of President Vladimir Putin.
The Head of State will also take part in the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union, all in the framework of the 64th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations, and the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The stay takes place in a week of coincidence in the links between both governments and peoples, as this May 8 marks the tenth anniversary of the signing of the treaty establishing the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), by the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, an integrationist bloc that would later be joined by Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
Cuba has been an observer state of the EEU since December 11, 2020. The Eurasian Supreme Economic Council will hold a session during the conference. The Cuban President will participate for the first time in person in these summits, although since December 2020 he will do so virtually, an expression of Cuba's will to strengthen its ties with the EU.
On May 6, President Vladimir Putin assumed, for the fifth time, a six-year term at the head of the Russian Federation, after the recent elections, when he received the affirmative vote of more than 87% of the electorate, the highest vote he has received in the presidential elections he has run for.
The official delegation of the largest of the Antilles is composed of the member of the Political Bureau and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla; the head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Party, Emilio Lozada Garcia; by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, among other executives.
The Cuban delegation will participate, this May 9, in the military parade and other activities in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. This is a tradition maintained by the Russian Federation of the former Soviet Union, whose people were the main protagonists in the struggle and defeat of Nazi Germany, and in which they offered more than 20 million lives.
This is Díaz-Canel's fourth visit to Russia during his term as Head of State. Relations between Russia and Cuba are described as excellent by their governments, both with the aim of raising economic-commercial relations to the same level as political and diplomatic ones.
Russia is involved in the materialization of important projects of Cuba's Economic and Social Development Program until 2030, in areas such as energy, industry and transportation, among others.
