Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Yavad Zarif, reminded his French counterpart, Jean-Ives Le Drian, that the Islamic Republic kept alive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or 'nuclear deal.'

This was Zarif's response to recent statements by Le Drian about the need to negotiate some terms of this multilateral agreement with the inclusion of Iran's missile and ballistics program.

He also addressed accusations by the French minister that Iran is destabilizing the West Asian region by saying that Paris is actually indirectly involved in the genocide in Yemen.

'Esteemed colleague,' Zarif tweeted, 'you began your cabinet career with arms sales to war criminals. Avoid absurd nonsense about Iran.'

Le Drian stated that the JCPOA was insufficient and that it should also encompass Iran's missile deterrent program.

In the opinion of the head of Iranian diplomacy, the E3 (Germany, France and the United Kingdom, co-signatories of the deal) did little or very little to save the treaty and prefer to follow the script of the United States.

In any case, the JCPOA is alive thanks to Iran and not the E3.

The nuclear agreement was signed in 2015 by Tehran and the 5 + 1 group, then made up of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China plus Germany. Washington would abandon it later in May 2018.
