Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) India along with Brazil, South Africa and China denounced the 'double standards' of the richest countries at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

In a joint statement issued at COP27, the so-called Basic group criticized the developed nations for backtracking on their commitment to provide fundings to poor countries to fight climate change, while on the other hand increasing consumption and production of fossil fuels.

‘There is a significant increase in consumption and production of fossil fuels in the last year by rich countries, while continuing to pressure developing states to abandon the same resources,’ the plaintiffs pointed out.

This double standard is incompatible with climate equity and justice, Basic group´s statement said.

Representatives from Brazil, South Africa, India and China met on the sidelines of the COP27 Climate Summit in this Egyptian resort town where they expressed concern that climate finance to be provided by developed countries continues to fall short of the $100 billion annual commitment.
