Mexican Filmmaker and Brazilian Screenwriter Receive WGA Nominations
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Brazilian screenwriter Vera Blasi received nominations this Tuesday for the Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in writing for film, television, radio, and digital media.
Del Toro Competes in Adapted Screenplay Category
The prodigious Mexican director is competing in the adapted screenplay category for his highly anticipated reinterpretation of 'Frankenstein', alongside Will Tracy ('Bugonia'), Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell ('Hamnet'); Paul Thomas Anderson ('One Battle After Another'); and Clint Bentley & Greg Kwedar ('Train Dreams').
Original Screenplay Nominees
In the original screenplay category, the Guild recognized David Koepp for the spy thriller 'Black Bag'; Mary Bronstein and the A24 team for 'If I Had Legs I'd Kick You'; Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for 'Marty Supreme'; Ryan Coogler for the vampire thriller 'Sinners'; and Zach Cregger for 'Weapons'.
Television Categories Feature Top Series
In the drama series section, 'Pluribus', the Apple TV series in which Blasi is involved, will compete for the award against Disney+'s 'Andor', starring Mexican actor Diego Luna; 'Severance'; 'The White Lotus'; and the acclaimed 'The Pitt'.
Both 'The Pitt' and 'Pluribus' and 'Severance' will also face off in the new series category alongside 'The Studio', 'Task', and 'The Chair Company'.
Meanwhile, the comedy series category is rounded out by 'Abbott Elementary', 'The Studio', 'The Chair Company', 'Hacks', and 'The Rehearsal'. The limited series nominees are 'The Beast in Me', 'Black Rabbit', 'Death by Lightning', 'Dying for Sex', and 'Sirens'.
Winners to Be Announced in March
The winners of these awards, which serve as a thermometer for predicting Oscar favorites, will be announced next March 8th.
