Mexican President Reaffirms Solidarity with Cuba Amid US Blockade
President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed today that Mexico will continue to be solidarious with Cuba, a country that has faced an economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States for over six decades.

"Mexico has always been solidarious and will continue to be solidarious," the president asserted during her regular meeting with journalists.

Sovereign Decision on Oil Shipments
From the National Palace, the head of the executive branch reiterated that her country's decision to sell or provide oil to the largest of the Antilles for humanitarian reasons is related to a sovereign determination "that has been in place for many years."

She emphasized that the island has suffered a blockade "for far too many years" and that this "has generated supply problems."

"The decision of when it is sent, how it is sent, is a sovereign decision and is based on what Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos) defines, according to contracts, or otherwise of the government, as a humanitarian decision to send under certain circumstances," she stated.

In response to a question about media reports regarding a supposed suspension of oil shipments to the island, Sheinbaum stressed that "it is a sovereign decision and is made when necessary."

Economic Impact of the US Blockade
According to the most recent data, Washington's siege against Cuba caused estimated damages of $7.5561 billion between March 2024 and February last year, a 49 percent increase compared to the previous period.

In the health sector alone, this policy resulted in losses of nearly $300 million in one year, while the impact in the energy sector exceeded $496 million due to restrictions on importing fuel and spare parts.

International Support at the United Nations
Last October 29th, Cuba achieved a new victory in the United Nations General Assembly, receiving 165 votes in favor of the resolution calling for an end to the blockade.
