The Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday awarded the order of the Ecumencial Patriach Bartolomew Star to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, as an acknowledgement of the Cuban State's support for that religious institution.
In the Sacred Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Myra, consecrated two decades ago in Havana’s Historic Heart, the Cuban head of State was welcomed by the representative of the ecumenical patriarchate who is visiting the Caribbean island, the Archbishop of Australia, Monsignor Makarios.
According to the ecclesiastical authority, the distinction is a recognition of the Revolution’s collaboration with the Patriarchate of Constantinople in welcoming this temple of Byzantine architecture 20 years ago.
In his words, His Eminence Makarios stressed that Cuba is an ecumenical island where respect for religious diversity is breathed, and said that he was sure that the Cuban people would move forward, national television reported.
Díaz-Canel, in turn, thanked the patriarchate for its historic position against coercive measures towards Cuba, and recalled the meeting between the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, and His All Holiness Bartholomew.
He also recalled the coincidences in principles between the Cuban Revolution and the ecumenical patriarchate on issues such as peaceful coexistence and environmental protection.
After the presentation of the Patriarch’s order, the head of State had an official picture taken at the plaque commemorating the presentation of the key to the Sacred Cathedral between the Commander-in-Chief and His All Holiness Bartholomew.
