Havana, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) The Havana-based Floridita bar-restaurant is celebraring its 205th anniversary on Tuesday, with a growing demand from holidaymakers from all over the world.

It is not only about the interest in getting to that place, but also about getting to know the world-famous establishment.

Known as La Piña de Plata (The Silver Pineapple) in its origins, the establishment was inaugurated on July 6, 1817.

This celebrity is based on several elements, especially the quality of service, and the visits from travelers from all five continents, when the US magazine Esquire included it in 1953 among the seven most famous bars in the world.

Among its novelties are a contest called El Rey del Daiquiri (The Daiquiri King), which in its 2012 edition included the participation of many Cuban and foreign bartenders from the franchises of the establishment in the United Kingdom, Spain and Mexico.

El Floridita has 55 employees, including 18 women, and it had two winners of the international Habanosommelier contest (pairing of drinks, food and cigars). They are Zudlay Napoles and Orlando Blanco, the latter being the house’s maître.

El Floridita has been visited by world-renowned figures such as Paco Rabanne, Naomi Campbell, Matt Dillon, Kate Mosse, Dany Glober, Jack Nicholson, Fito Paez and Jean Paul Belmondo, among others.

Daiquiri is the leading drink at the place with an interesting recipe based on the juice of half a lime, a spoonful of white sugar, five drops of maraschino liqueur, one and a half ounces of three-year-old Havana Club rum and crushed ice.

Located at 557 Obispo Street, in Old Havana, it is a very popular and attractive place for travelers.

This evergreen culinary feast is a constant tribute to US writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), who at one time practically commanded a corner of the bar.

Hemingway, who drank large quantities of Daiquiri, lived in Cuba for more than 20 years, which is why he has a bronze sculpture at the same place where he used to stand.
