Judo athlete Jonnathan Charón finished in fifth place in the under 60-kilogram category on the first day of the Grand Prix in Guadalajara, Mexico. The event, which concludes this Sunday, features 231 representatives - 142 men and 89 women - from 33 countries.

According to the International Federation's website, www.ijf.org, Charón lost "by Ippon" to Belgium's Jorre Verstraen in the bronze medal match for his division.

In his debut match, he won "by two Yukos" against Ukrainian Dilshot Jamatok. He was subsequently defeated by French judoka Jean Enzo, which sent him to the repechage round. In this stage, he overcame Hungary's Martón Andradi "by Ippon" before losing to Verstraen.

This Saturday, Cuban athlete Marlón Herrera (73 kg) saw action, but was bested in his first match "by two Wazari" against the Czech Republic's Chusniddin Karimov.

Consequently, the only two disciples of coach Julio Alderete registered for the Grand Prix concluded their participation without winning any medals.

As scheduled, Charón, Herrera, and Alderete will remain in the Mexican city until November 3rd to complete a training camp.
