We are constantly stressed. Adulthood often feels like an endless burden. Life slips away amid problems and worries, because it is difficult to cover every need or adjust expectations to reality—which, in practice, can feel like limiting ambitions, not dreaming, and that is even more serious. As a result, we fall into anxiety and discouragement.

Stress has been called the epidemic of the 21st century. We need to slow down, because at this pace, we will fall ill. Although stress is a natural response to threats or stimuli, in most cases it manifests as a state of worry or mental tension that limits our psychological well-being and can also trigger physical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

The fast-paced routine we live in consumes us, and sometimes we don’t realize how worn down we are until unpleasant sensations become recurrent. We often mistake them as “normal.”

For instance: loss of appetite or stomach discomfort, muscle tension, headaches, neck, shoulder, or back pain, teeth grinding, even a lump in the throat or chest tightness, as well as skin rashes or other infections. All of these can be stress-related.

If we pay closer attention to ourselves, we can identify the warning signs before being dragged into a pit of anxiety. Other symptoms may include lack of concentration, poor sleep, restlessness, irritability over minor issues, sadness, exhaustion, or excessive worry. Experiencing such emotions occasionally is part of life, but the problem arises when they persist.

The Importance of Taking Breaks

The recommendation is simple: take breaks to relax, whether we feel the need or not. It will never hurt, and it will always benefit the mind and, therefore, the body, as it helps restore balance to biological functions and processes. That is why our daily routines should incorporate activities that disconnect us from work and constant responsibilities.

Finding What Works for You

Resting or distracting ourselves, even briefly, can help release tension. There are many methods, and each person must discover what works best for them—going to the beach, taking a walk in a quiet place, practicing sports or yoga, meditating, listening to music, reading, or watching television.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as leaving everything aside and staying still at home—if home is where you find peace.
