Førde, Norway – Weightlifter Marifélix Sarría gave Cuba three silver medals in the women's +86 kg category at the 2025 Førde World Championships.
Sarría, the reigning junior world champion, lifted 118 kilograms in her third snatch attempt, after successfully lifting 113 kg on her first attempt and failing her second at 117 kg.
The gold medal in the snatch was won by South Korea's Hyejeong Park (125 kg), while the bronze was secured by China's Linhan Zhu (116 kg).
In the clean and jerk, the Cuban lifter failed her first attempt at 157 kg but mastered the weight on her next try. On her third attempt, she missed 165 kg, which would have earned her the event gold.
Park also claimed the crown in this discipline with 158 kg, and the third place was taken by American lifter Mary Theisen Lappen (154 kg).
The Asian representative also triumphed in the total (283 kg), followed by Sarría (275 kg) and Lappen (269 kg).
With her brilliant performance, the Caribbean athlete surpassed the best result ever achieved by a Cuban weightlifter in world championships.
That previous record was held by Ludia Montero, who won two silver medals at the world championship in Pattaya, Thailand, in 2019.
In the men's +110 kg category, which closed the event on Saturday, Armenian Varazdat Lalayan conquered the title with a total of 461 kg (211 in snatch and 250 in clean and jerk). He was followed by Bahrain's Gor Minasian, who lifted 447 kg (205+242), and South Korea's Song Yeong-Hwan, who lifted 410 kg (175+235).
