The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said today that it is promoting in Cuba the proper management of water resources.

In a statement issued today in Havana, it added that such purpose is included in the programs for food security of this nation in which the United Nations (UN) entity collaborates.

The message recalled that the XXIV edition of the Conference of Ibero-American Water Directors (Codia) was held between November 15 and 17 in Havana, with an agenda focused on the main advances and challenges in improving water quality and wastewater treatment, in the framework of the acceleration of Sustainable Development Goal No.6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

FAO participated in the meeting with a focus on a topic of global interest: the proper management of water resources for food security.

Rapid population growth, urbanization, economic development, and climate change are putting the planet’s water resources under increasing stress, while freshwater resources per person have declined by 20 percent in recent decades, and water availability and quality are deteriorating rapidly.
