Demographic Alert: Cuba's population is aging
especiales
The director of the Center for Demographic Studies at the University of Havana, Antonio Aja, warned of Cuba's complex demographic situation, given the aging trend, since 24.4 percent of the total population, at the end of 2023, was 60 years old and older.
The red lights are flashing with demographic data that affect the economy and mark a high cost for society and the family, given the care and attention required by the growing elderly population, the increase in the cost of security and social assistance programs, and the difficulties in renewing the country's labor resources.
He called for promoting the birth rate as much as possible, respecting the sexual and reproductive rights of women, and creating conditions for the entire population of the country to work, whether they are old or not.
