Cuba’s Busy Agenda at Doha Summit Makes Headlines

Cuba's broad agenda at the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC) in Doha, Qatar, made headlines during the week that ends on Saturday.

The Cuban delegation, headed by Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca, held several bilateral meetings with senior officials from India, China, Egypt, as well as representatives of international organizations.

From Cuba’s presidency of the Group of 77 plus China, Malmierca defended at the Conference the right of the LDCs to receive international assistance, especially from the most developed nations.

He also reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to the LDCs to help overcome the obstacles to their sustainable development, so that none of the members is left behind.

“We will work to materialize cooperation projects in the fields of health care, biotechnology, education, fighting climate change, and disaster prevention, which teach a lesson in unity and complementarity,” the Cuban minister noted.

This week, the Cuban Government accepted the official request from the Executive of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) to celebrate in Havana the Third Cycle of the Roundtable for Peace Talks.

In this regard, President Miguel Diaz-Canel considered Cuba’s election for a new cycle of peace talks in Colombia as honorable and thus it will contribute to achieving that goal.

Eugenio Martinez Enriquez, director general of the Latin America and Caribbean Department at Cuba’s Foreign Ministry, explained that as a guarantor country of these talks, Cuba participates in person in the Dialogue Table and makes a diplomatic and political contribution to the construction of peace in Colombia.

“Being the venue entails a high responsibility, which Cuba is in a position to fulfill due to its experience in other negotiations processes at which the parties have recognized its impartiality, he said in an interview on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
