Cuba is facing a complex scenario related to its drinking water supply system, marked by breakdown of important equipment, authorities in the sector said on Tuesday.

The president of the Cuban Water and Sewage conglomerate, Jose Antonio Hernandez, told reporters in Havana that the problems of the water supply system stem from irregularities in the power system, because some circuit protection devices go off at times with an impact on the operations of water supply equipment.

The breakdown of water supply stations has affected over 600 thousand citizens largely concentrated in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Havana, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Holguin, Santiago and Granma.

Hernandez said that work in underway to solve the problems, despite the existence of a large number of inoperative equipment. He announced the arrival of important resources which will help relieve the tense water supply situation.
