The UN Security Council will analyze in an emergency session the tense situation in the Middle East, after the intensification of Israeli attacks against Gaza and Lebanon and Iran's response.

The meeting coincides with the warning from the United Nations about the situation of civilians trapped in a conflict that already threatens to spill over beyond the Middle East.

The organization confirmed on Monday that it expects an increase in the number of displaced people, while the Israel Defense Forces continue to issue evacuation orders in 30 villages in southern Lebanon.

More than 100,000 people relocated from Lebanon to Syria, while more than 200,000 people left southern Lebanon and another 60,000 fled their homes in northern Israel.

The UN Refugee Agency continues to step up its emergency response and work with its partners to provide urgent humanitarian and protection support in its response to displaced people.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the widening of the conflict in the Middle East, warning of a succession of escalations in the region. “This has to stop. We need a ceasefire without hesitation,” he said in a statement released by his spokesperson.

Guterres previously called for an immediate ceasefire, as well as respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Secretary-General spoke on Tuesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, to whom he confirmed that the United Nations system in the country has mobilized to help those in need as a result of the offensive. He also announced an appeal to the international community to raise $426 million to support the humanitarian situation of one million persons.
