Cubans nominated for Ibero-American film and TV awards

Cuban sound engineer Angie Hernández and musician Ulises Hernández were nominated for the 2025 Platino Awards, which recognize the most outstanding figures in Ibero-American film and television, according to news released today in Havana.
With extensive careers in national cinema, both have reached the final nomination stage for these awards in their 12th edition, which will be presented on April 27 at the Ifema Municipal Palace in Madrid, Spain, according to the Cubacine Icaic website.
A graduate of the Faculty of Audiovisual Media Arts (Famca) and the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Angie Hernández is nominated for the Platino Awards for the film A Night with the Rolling Stones.
The film was directed by Patricia Ramos, with whom she has collaborated on several previous projects, including El techo (2016), I Love Lotus (2018), and El aniversario (2022).
The sound of this Cuban film is nominated alongside its counterparts from Spain (La infiltrada and Segundo premio) and Argentina (El Jockey).
Hernández is also responsible for the sound design on the documentaries Tren de la Línea Norte (2013) by Marcelo Martín; La música de las esferas (2018) by Marcel Beltrán; and Órgano (2019) by Rosa María Rodríguez. She recently won an award in her specialty at the Ceará Film Festival (Brazil) for La mujer salvaje (2023) by Alan González.
Her filmography also includes the still-unreleased film Estrés by Marilyn Solaya.
Ulises Hernández is nominated for a Platino Award for the Cuban-Costa Rican co-production La invención de las especias, directed by Tania Hermida.
The renowned Cuban musician and composer is competing in his category with some of the most prestigious creators composing film soundtracks, such as Alberto Iglesias for The Room Next Door and Gustavo Santaolalla for Pedro Páramo.
With an impressive resume in Cuban cinema, Ulises composed music for films by Enrique Álvarez (The Wave, The Black Box, Under a Powerful Sun), Arturo Sotto (Pon tu Pensamiento en mí), Pastor Vega (Vidas paralelas), and Pavel Giroud (La Edad de la Peseta, El acompañante).
For some of his musical soundtracks, the musician has received several awards, both in Cuba and abroad.
Recently, the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema awarded him the Coral Award in his specialty specifically for The Invention of Species, the film now nominated for the Platinum Award.
Among the films nominated for the main award are the Spanish film La infiltrada and the Argentine film El Jockey, which also stand out as the most talked about in this edition, in 11 and nine¨ categories respectively. On television, the series Cien años de soledad garnered attention with eight nominations.
¨La infiltrada¨ and ¨El Jockey¨ compete in the Best Film category against the Brazilian film ¨Todavía estoy aquí¨, the Portuguese film ¨Grand Tour¨, and the Spanish film ¨El 47¨.
Among the best directors selected for the final competition were Arantxa Echevarría for ¨La infiltrada¨, Luis Ortega for ¨El Jockey¨, Walter Salles for ¨Todavía estoy aquí¨, and Pedro Almodóvar for ¨La habitación de al lado¨.
Since its first edition in 2014, the Platino Awards have established themselves as a benchmark in the Ibero-American film industry, bringing together the most prominent figures in film and television from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. Its objective is to increase the visibility and international recognition of the region’s projects, as well as to encourage the production and quality of the works, according to the review published by Cubacine Icaic.
