Cuban education is a key element of Cuban revolution a theme that stood out today on the third day of the 26th Convention of Solidarity with Cuba in Belén, capital of the northern Brazilian state of Para.

Professor Alejandro Barro, dean of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Havana, said in his dissertation that education is one of the achievements of the revolutionary process since 1959 and teaching is organized through a set of organically articulated subsystems.

He alluded to La historia me absolverá, the self-defense statement of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, during the trial against him that began on October 16, 1953 due to the actions on July 26th,1953, in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively.

In the judicial hearing, the then young graduate in Civil Law decides to assume his own defense and in the document he denounces what he considers the evils of Cuba at that time, summarized in six fundamental problems: land, industrialization, housing, unemployment, education and health.

Although a system of free and compulsory public primary education was established in Cuba, by 1953, with a population of 6.5 million inhabitants, there were half a million children without schools, one million illiterate people and 10,000 teachers without jobs.

With the revolutionary triumph, Barro pointed out, free and universal education was guaranteed with study materials and the necessary teaching reached isolated communities.
