January 29, 2025 marks the centenary of the birth of two emblematic figures of Cuban culture: playwright Abelardo Estorino and photographer Raúl Corrales. Both, from their respective disciplines, contributed significantly to the enrichment of the nation's artistic heritage, becoming part of the collective memory.

Abelardo Estorino (1925-2013), a native of Unión de Reyes, Matanzas, is considered one of the most significant playwrights in the island. His work is characterized by a deep exploration of human psychology and sharp social criticism, addressing issues such as identity, family, and the complexities of Cuban society.

Among his most notable pieces are El robo del cochino and Morir del cuento, which have been performed on many national and international stages. For his innovative style and his ability to recreate Cuban reality, he was awarded two important prizes: the National Literature Prize in 1992 and the National Theatre Prize in 2002.

Estorino's avant-garde approach and ability to combine the universal with the local allowed him to connect with various generations of spectators. In addition to his work as a playwright, Estorino worked as a theatre director, bringing a fresh and innovative vision to the Cuban stage. A generous and committed man, he was a mentor to young talents and a promoter of theatrical development in Cuba.

Raúl Corrales (1925-2006), born in Ciego de Ávila, established himself as one of the most outstanding photographers in Cuban history. His lens captured crucial moments of the Cuban Revolution, offering a unique and human perspective of the events. Works such as El sueño and La caballería have become icons that transcend borders and eras. His ability to tell stories through images allowed him to document Cuban reality with unparalleled sensitivity and depth.

Although Corrales' work is not limited to historical documentation, it also reflects the everyday life and essence of the Cuban people. His poetic approach and ability to capture nuances gave him a privileged place in the continent's photography. In 1996, he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts.

In that immense generation of great documentary photographers, creators of a great testimony of the epic of the Revolution, Corrales stands out for the uniqueness of his discourse.

The coincidence of the centenary celebration of Abelardo Estorino and Raúl Corrales offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of their works on Cuban culture. The two artists were able to express the essence of a country and a culture in constant transformation, leaving behind a heritage that continues to inspire and enrich the national artistic panorama, in dialogue with the world's heritage.
