Cuban wrestler Milaimis Marín (76 kg) defeated India’s Priya by technical superiority (10-0) to secure the bronze medal at the Wrestling World Championships, held in Zagreb, Croatia.
This marks Marín’s first medal at the senior level, adding to the gold she won at the Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2019.
The Havana-born athlete, who also earned a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has now become the second Cuban woman to claim a medal at a world event.
Lianna de la Caridad Montero opened that path for Cuban women when she took bronze at the Budapest edition in 2018.
On Wednesday, Cuba’s Laura Herin (53 kg) lost 3-4 in a tightly contested round-of-16 match against Ecuador’s Olympic silver medalist Lucía Yépez. However, the South American continued to advance, thereby “pulling” the fighter from Camagüey into the repechage round, scheduled for Thursday—the same day when “step-backs and counterbalances” in the Greco-Roman style will begin.
Cuba’s Oscar Pino (130 kg) is set to make his debut against Sweden’s Jacob Edward Logaard.
