The one-woman show Me llamaban Tula (They Called Me Tula) won the Popularity Award at the 6th edition of the Latin American Monologue Festival (FML), which concluded on Sunday night in the central province of Cienfuegos.

With dramaturgy and staging by Rafael Gonzalez, actress Diana Laura Rubio Gradaille took on a project that makes a journey through the life and work of Gertrudiz Gomez de Avellaneda, Cuban poetess of the 19th century.

La Tula's trajectory is reconstructed by the group Teatro Escambray from letters, poems, fragments of her texts, diary and passages written about the Camagüey native, a woman who stood up to her time and defied the constraints of women.

Cienfuegos keeps in its collective memory the brushstrokes of a Tula who in April 1860, accompanied by her husband, attended the opening of the Avellaneda Theater in Paseo de Vives, today Paseo del Prado, precisely with a tragedy written by her.

Among the collateral awards, the jury of the Hermanos Saiz Association granted a Special Mention in recognition of the excellent vocal work and overflowing energy, as a performer, of Lisandra Hechavarria Hurtado, for the work Omiyiero o Remolino de las aguas (Omiyiero or Remolino de las aguas).

It also awarded the collateral prize for Best Young Actress of the Latin American Monologue Festival, for her excellent interpretation, scenic mastery, versatility, a deep understanding of the character and an exceptional ability to convey emotions through her performance to Diana Laura Rubio Gradaille, for her role in Me llamaban Tula.

Likewise, the Direction of Houses of Culture awarded the one-man show Favez, a staging by the group Kilometros Cero, while the Cuban Writers and Artists Association recognized Frontera SA, a theme defended by the company Teatro sobre el camino, from the province of Villa Clara.

During the four days of the FML -from February 27 to this Sunday- 12 plays from four countries -Uruguay, Mexico, Costa Rica and Cuba- were staged in Cienfuegos.

In the midst of the celebration of the single-person show, Ruben Dario Salazar and Senen Calero, emblematic personalities of Cuban theater, received the Terry 2025 Award and the Rosette of the City.
