Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed condolences on the death of famous Mexican singer Jose Jose, during a tour of the country.

'Very unfortunate. Jose Jose was an extraordinary singer at a time in which he and the romantic songs he sang made many people from my own generation cry and be happy,' the Mexican President stated after touring the Rural Valle de Allende Hospital in Chihuahua.

The President started a three-day tour of Coahuila and Chihuahua on Friday, including visits to rural hospitals in the Tarahumara Mountains, and invited people to 'keep on listening to his songs,' to pay tribute to Jose Jose.

The popular Mexican singer and actor died Sunday at the age of 71, and fans across the world lamented the news.

Jose Jose, the stage name of Jose Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2017, and had undergone chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Known as 'The Prince of Songs,' he was born on February 17, 1948. His father was an tenor opera singer, and his mother was a concert pianist.

Jose Jose was recognized throughout his career of more than 55 years with many awards, inside and outside Mexico. He won more than 200 Golden and Platinum Discs, and his talent also saw him work on television and in the movies.

He sold more than 120 million records, making him one of the most successful Latin American singers in history.
