One of the main halls in the presidency of Costa Rica will welcome today a painting with the image of one of the Cuban independence heroes, Antonio Maceo. The painting was given to president Luis Guillermo Solis in his recent visit to Havana.

The artwork, entitled El General Antonio, was painted by artist Erik Olivera Rubio and it was given to the head of state during his recent visit to Cuba in December.

On the occasion, the Academy of History of Cuba bestowed the Costa Rican head of state the award Corresponding Foreign Academician of the institution.

The painting will be placed together with former Costa Rican presidents Juan Rafael Mora Porras (Meritorious of the Homeland), and Ricardo Jimenez Oreamuno, as well as Salvadorian military officer Jose Maria Canas Escamilla —a man who led Costa Rican army against William Walker´s filibusters (1856-1857).

During his stay in Havana two months ago, Solis visited the monument El Cacahual where the relics of Antonio Maceo were buried.
