I come to defend our fraternal, productive, and historical relations, said the Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis after he arrived at the Jose Marti airport. He was welcomed by Rogelio Sierra, deputy ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is a great honor to be here. I want to express my fraternal gratitude to the Cuban government, as well as to the extraordinary people of Cuba. I have in my hands the Cuban flag, as expression of respect and affection. He also noted that his visit has 4 main goals: firstly, he wants to end with satisfaction the normalization process between the two countries. Secondly, he wants to recognize Cuba as key element in the Caribbean Basin, region to which Costa Rica needs to target its foreign policy. Thirdly, he plans to open the technical cooperation in Cuba. And finally, he intends to foster trade exchanges. Nowadays, Costa Rica exports to Cuba more than 40 millions USD every year.
Requested by the press, Solis also confirmed that migratory talks will be on the agenda. This is the first visit of a Costa Rican president to Cuba after 1959.
