Nearly 10 million American adults thought seriously about killing themselves during the past 12 months from when they were surveyed, according to US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Nearly 10 million American adults considered taking their own lives in 2015, with more women than men attempting suicide, the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said in a report on Thursday. Last year 9.8 million US adults, or 4 percent of the population, "thought seriously about killing themselves during the past 12 months from when they were surveyed," the report stated. "The [study shows an] increase in the rate of nonfatal suicide attempts among… females — up from 1.5 percent in 2014 to 2 percent in 2015."

New Report Reveals Suicide Rate Among US Veterans Skyrockets

The mental-health agency, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, added that the nation’s suicide rate is at its highest level since 2000. Suicide has become "the 10th-leading cause of death in the United States," with nearly 42,000 Americans a year taking their own lives.

On Wednesday, New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported a recent spike in local suicide rates, with the number of young female New Yorkers killing themselves rising to 3.9 deaths per 100,000 individuals in 2014 from 2.3 deaths per 100,000 in 2000.
