The committee’s spokesperson for Moscow, Yulia Ivanova, told Russia’s Interfax news agency that a criminal case is being launched into the “deliberate destruction or damage to property entailing human death.”

She said the fire, which started early Sunday, had killed at least 11 people. Around 3,000 square meters of the building has also been damaged in the blaze.

Police sources said two separate fire outbreak points were found, leading to suspicions that it was an act of arson.

According to official figures, more than 10,000 people die every year in Russia because of fires.
