The United States government will implement the scheduled tariffs on August 1 with countries such as Mexico, according to Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
In an interview with Fox News, the U.S. official stated that no extensions or grace periods are being considered this time for the application of import taxes on products like tomatoes.
“There will be no extensions, no further grace periods, the tariffs are ready. They will be enforced on time, and customs will begin collecting the money, and that is all,” Lutnick asserted.
On July 17, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new package of tariffs targeting various countries, including Mexico, one of the nation's key trading partners.
In response to the announcement, the president of the Latin American country, Claudia Sheinbaum, said her administration would seek ways to negotiate the measure. However, no agreement with Washington has been reported as of yet.
Over the weekend, the Mexican leader met with the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson. She is expected to meet with two U.S. lawmakers, one Democrat and one Republican, before the end of July.
