Massieu went to Dar al-Fouad Hospital, on the outskirts of Cairo, along with eight family members of the victims.

Mexican Foreign Ministry officials told EFE that Massieu is accompanied by three federal policemen and two doctors from the health ministry to examine the wounded and check if they can be flown back with the delegation, which includes forensic experts to help identify the bodies of the deceased.

The repatriation of those wounded is expected to take place in two or three days, the officials said, noting that returning the dead bodies could take longer.

The foreign minister and her delegation have no plan to visit the area of the attack due to its remoteness, 300 kilometers (186miles) southwest of the capital.

Massieu will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi at about 1:00 p.m. to hear first-hand the progress of investigations.

The Egyptian security forces mistook the tourists for terrorists they were pursuing in the Western Desert.

On Tuesday, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto reiterated the need for a prompt and exhaustive inquiry into the incident in a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
