Members of the Islamic State group executed at least 127 people Wednesday in the town of al-Qaim, on the border with Syria, security officials said.

The head of the Council of Anbar province, a large desert area where the Islamic State group controls more than 60 percent of the territory, said the extremist militants fired on tribesmen in front of dozens of residents.

Local media reported that the brutal act seemed to be in retaliation for the progress made by Iraqi forces against Islamic State group forces in the area.

The Iraqi army and militia forces launched an operation Wednesday to liberate Anbar from the extremist group, as it continues to exact violence against the populations in the areas under its control.

The Islamic State group started its Iraqi campaign in early June 2014, taking over large areas of Iraq and Syria after reportedly obtaining significant amount of arms and vehicles. Meanwhile, its fighters have been committing horrendous crimes, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Syrian and Iraqi army troops and police officers.

The heavily-armed organization claims to have recruited thousands of fighters from the U.K., France, Germany and other European countries, as well as from the U.S., the Arab world, and the Caucasus region.

The violence carried out by this group has caused the displacement of about 1.2 million people, according to the United Nations.
