Cameroon Defense Minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo said Wednesday that hundreds of Boko Haram fighers were killed, as well as 13 Chadian and six Cameroonian soldiers in battles on the border.

Around 10,000 people were killed in Boko Haram battles in 2014.

Officials from the African Union (AU) – a regional bloc integrated by 54 countries, excluding Morocco – were creating plans Thursday for a multinational force that would push back against Boko Haram's increasing influence. Last week, the AU approved a force of 7,500 troops from Benin, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria. They are seeking financing from the United Nations, through the Security Council.

Ghanaian President John Mahama announced in mid-January that he and other West African leaders will seek to create a multinational task force to combat Boko Haram.
